Starting this year, we asked applicants to explain how they would end wrong way driving (WWD) in our area. Our scholarship winner, Daisy, had this insightful answer:
Wrong way crashes are a growing issue in our society, and because of this, it is an issue that needs to be addressed. There is no one solution to a problem as heavy as this, but one idea I feel could prevent wrong-way drivers is to highlight the issue at the root. In my opinion, stopping wrong-way drivers means stopping people at the bar, party, or home where they were put in a compromised state. As a community, we need to raise awareness or how we can do our part in stopping this. Don’t be the person who turns a blind eye to someone getting in a vehicle drunk. Although you aren’t causing the accident yourself, you are contributing to this problem. Once a person gets in a vehicle and starts driving while intoxicated or compromised, damage has already been done. Therefore, I would like to see incentives for those who choose to be a designated driver, or for those who take action and stop someone from driving themselves.
Best of luck to Daisy on her journey at UW-Madison. GO Badgers!
KMTMF thoughts:
Hopefully, this is a sign of better things to come from the new generation. There is no one answer to a complex social problem like WWDs. With every choice, each of us has the power to make the world a better place or not. If you don't know, might be a good idea to think about the consequences before you act. Some things we do all the time and take for granted can have lifelong consequences for ourselves and especially for others. Some are super rare, but I can tell you the super rare happens. Ask Kaytlyn.
One way to address a root cause is to change the culture and to stay off the slippery slope of accepting drinking and driving as a part of life. Set a higher standard for yourself, look out for others, take the keys, call a SafeRide. There are no ribbons for making it home loaded and no downside to taking a ride - the view is better from the passenger seat anyway. Individual freedom isn't free when your actions cost someone else theirs. Ask Kaytlyn. Please think before you drink. It is a law of nature that a better world doesn't build itself. You can choose to make a difference. We hope you do.
